Most modern quantum computers need to be cooled and vacuum-sealed to protect qubits with special properties. At Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) in Tennessee, Quantum Brilliance recently integrated the facility’s first onsite, commercial quantum-classical hybrid cluster that uses defects in diamonds as qubits, says CTO Marcus Doherty. The diamonds are hardier than traditional qubits, and can operate at room temperature, saving energy and space. The quantum microprocessor, which is about the size of a desktop computer and could help simulate chemistry between molecules, preserved quantum states for over a millisecond in tests.
